As I said, Boeing will be fine.

Yet the jetliner industry is a duopoly with very high barriers to entry, so nobody is entering the world market in a serious way in the next decade, at least.

Keep your eye on China.

That was an interesting analysis.

If the Chinese Comac C919 proves successful , I have a feeling many carriers all over the developing world will be ordering there. They already have 305 firm orders and 1008 commitments . Even if they stay mostly domestic, with Chinese insatiable growth , this is 1/3 of the market once dominated by AirBus and Boeing. Considering how good China is in stealing ideas, replicating them domestically, and generally building things based on western ideas, I’d be surprised if they don’t become a major player in the 2020's.

I guess I’m not sure how this would play out if Comac didn’t exist - would Boeing and AirBus get these 1000 orders and just build them as they come with the existing schedule of making 60 per month, or would they somehow increase their production numbers to meet the demand? I am not sure that is even possible. World was ready for another builder to meet the demand of growth in China and developing nations.

Wouldn’t the A220 compete with C919? That said, with a viable alternative to the Boeing Airbus duopoly, the Chinese government could get Chinese carriers alone to buy a ton of C919s.

“The Comac C919 is a narrow-body   twinjet   airliner developed by Chinese aerospace manufacturer Comac . The development programme was launched in 2008, production of the prototype began in December 2011, it rolled out on 2 November 2015 and the aircraft’s maiden flight was on 5 May 2017. Its first commercial deliveries are expected in 2021 to China Eastern Airlines . The aircraft, primarily constructed with aluminium alloys , is to be powered by either CFM International LEAP or ACAE CJ-1000A turbofan engines, and can carry 156 to 168 passengers in a normal operating configuration up to 5,555 km (3000 nmi). It is intended to compete primarily with the Boeing 737 MAX and Airbus A320neo . As of 31 August 2018, Comac has 1008 commitments including 305 firm orders, mostly from Chinese leasing companies or airlines with the exception of GE .”
